How to Tell What You Have (And Why the Assessment Confirms It)
Quick test: open the fireplace and look inside. If you see brick all the way around (including the back wall and floor), and the brick has visible mortar joints between individual bricks, you have a masonry fireplace. If you see smooth cement-like panels covering the back and sides (sometimes with a brick pattern molded into the surface), and there's a metal frame visible at the top or sides, you have a prefab fireplace. Can I use regular masonry mortar to repair my firebox?
No, and this is the single most common DIY fireplace mistake. Regular masonry mortar — the kind you buy at a hardware store — fails within a year inside a firebox because it can't withstand the heat cycles. Firebox repair requires high-temperature refractory mortar (rated for 2000°F+ continuous use). The two products look similar in the bag but behave completely differently when heated. Using regular mortar can cause the joints to crack or fall out mid-fire, which creates safety risks ranging from firebox doesn't work right to smoke and heat reaching combustibles behind the firebox.
My damper won't open. Can it be fixed, or does it need replacement?
Usually fixable. Damper-stuck-shut is most often caused by rust at the pivot points (from not using the fireplace and moisture accumulating), a broken cable mechanism on top-mount dampers, or debris jammed in the throat. We can typically repair a stuck damper by replacing the cable, lubricating the pivot, replacing a worn gasket, or clearing the throat — without replacing the whole assembly. My refractory panels are cracked. Do they have to be replaced?
Usually yes, though depth and pattern matter. Hairline surface cracks in a few panels can sometimes be monitored and don't require immediate replacement.
